The Makery Nook FAQ's

Who are the workshops suitable for?

Our summer 26’ art workshops are designed for young people aged 11–16. No previous art or printmaking experience is needed, just an interest in being creative and trying something new.

Each session will have options for all levels of creativity or art experience, as apart from an initial demonstration the rest of the workshop is self-lead.

Does my child need to be good at art?

Not at all. These sessions are about exploring ideas, experimenting with materials and enjoying the creative process. They are suitable for complete beginners as well as those who already enjoy making art.

Are the sessions taught classes?

No. The workshops are facilitated rather than formally taught. Lucy our workshop leader will introduce techniques, provide guidance and support, and help participants develop their ideas, while encouraging independence and creative freedom.

What will my child make?

The summer ’26 workshops focuses on either painting or printmaking. Chose which session to join and then participants will have the opportunity to experiment with techniques and create original artwork to take home.

Are materials provided?

Yes. All materials and equipment are included in the workshop fee. There will be plenty of variety of materials available to choose from.

What should participants bring?

Just themselves and clothes they are comfortable to create in, we recommend wearing clothing that won't matter if it gets a little paint or ink on, or bring an apron.

You may bring waterbottles.

Are materials provided?

Yes. All materials and equipment are included in the workshop fee. There will be plenty of variety of materials available to choose from.

Can parents stay during the session?

These workshops are designed to give young people an independent creative experience.

Parents are welcome to drop off and collect participants at the agreed times.

We are also capturing permission for children to leave the session on their own during the booking process.

How many young people will be in each session?

Sessions are intentionally kept small, 10 to 12 kids maximum, to ensure everyone has space to work comfortably and receive individual support when needed.

Where are the workshops held?

We use a space called The Bothy, it is a hired space with a large open area, a small kitchen and a toilet.

Here’s the address: The Bothy, 12 Ashcroft Road, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, GL7 1QX

It is located on the edge of the main of Cirencester town center shopping area, with car parks nearby.

What if my child is nervous about attending?

Many participants attend on their own. The workshops are relaxed, friendly and designed to help young people feel comfortable while working at their own pace.

We also encourage kids to come along with their friends as well.

Will my child be supervised throughout & are supervisors DBS checked?

Yes. Sessions are facilitated by Lucy throughout, providing a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for all participants.

Lucy has completed and successfully received her Enhanced DBS check.

Are your classes suitable for young people with additional needs?

We very much hope so, and we welcome enquiries from all families. Our classes are designed for secondary school aged young people (ages 11–16), and we do our best to make them accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

The most important thing to know is that because our classes run without one-to-one support staff, we need each participant to be able to engage with the session independently, following group instructions, managing their own materials, and working at their own pace without needing dedicated personal support from a tutor throughout. If you are unsure whether this describes your child, please contact us before booking so we can talk it through together.

Is the venue accessible?

The venue is on the ground floor, with step-free access directly from street level into the main room. The room is generous with minimal furniture apart from the tables and chairs which can be placed to ensure greater accessibility.

There is a toilet on site, however it is restricted in size.

My child has a health condition or allergy I am worried about. What should I do?

Please tell us. Our booking process includes a section for medical information and allergies, and we ask all parents and carers to complete this fully before their child's first session. If your child has a condition that might affect participation, or a condition that means they carry medication - please also contact us directly so we can discuss any arrangements needed.

Our tutors are not trained healthcare professionals, but we can ensure that relevant information is available to the person in charge during the session. We will not share anything beyond what is necessary for the safe and positive running of the class. All information is held securely in line with our Privacy Policy and UK GDPR.

Please note, we use a shared space, with a kitchen area, therefore cannot guarentee the space is free of potential allergy inducing products.

How do I book?

The latest sessions can be found here. Places are limited and advance booking is recommended.
